Things to think about when choosing your new floor

Light or Dark Floor

Natural light, the size of the windows, other lighting and orientation are some of the points that can influence the choice of floor colour. A dark floor "swallows" a lot of light, and also affects the feeling of space. At the same time, a dark floor can create a warm and comfortable feel in large rooms. A light rug on a dark floor unites the room with its light-coloured walls.A light wood floor reflects the light and increases the feeling of space within the room, and can create a dramatic contrast to dark design details.

Adding Interest and Contrast

A mix of materials will add interest and create contrast

A wood floor, combined with hard stone or tiles, will add to the beauty of both materials. A similar contrast is achieved with soft textiles or carpets, which will accentuate the wood floor's smooth surface. A contrast will add an interesting aspect to your home.

Choose a floor that reflects your style

The character of the wood is important for the overall impression of the floor. Graining, figuring and colour variations give the floor a lively look, while a calm impression is achieved with an evenly toned floor.

Floors Feel Different

The type of surface you choose decides the feeling you get from the floor. Your feet are the part of your body that will feel the wood best. If you want to feel a flat, smooth surface, choose a floor with a silk matt finish.

To feel more wood texture, choose a brushed floor. As well as feeling totally different to walk on, they also reflect light differently.

The Floor and the Room

The floor creates the room's base, weight and character, and it is also the basis for the other elements, including the choice of furniture and other decor.

In other words, you need to use all your senses when choosing a floor. The floor is where fashion and style meet function.

The floor is the foundation

A floor is so much more than just something to walk on. The floor, with the walls and ceiling, contributes the room's fundamental feel. When designing your home, you should perhaps give first consideration to the floor.

The floor is the base, you can always repaint walls and ceilings, the floor is of a more permanent nature. The appearance of the floor, i.e. the colour, surface, pattern and hardness, can vary a lot between different wood species.

Kährs FSC-certified Oak Hampshire and Oak Verona FSC have been installed within ecoTECH’s pioneering Organics home. Located at BRE Innovation Park, in Watford, the eco-friendly construction combines the latest green technology whilst fulfilling the need for affordable urban design. Kährs wood floors - which are crafted from sustainable timber and feature an eco-friendly multi-layered construction - complemented the home’s green credentials, whilst providing a stylish and easily maintained flooring finish.

Showcasing the latest practical and sustainable construction innovations, The Park at BRE features a selection of demonstration properties. They include examples of MMC (modern methods of construction), near zero-carbon homes and over 200 different innovative and emerging technologies. Built using off-site construction methods, ecoTECH’s Organics Home can be mass-produced and configured to suit individual locations and home-owners’ needs. It provides a lifetime adaptable living space that’s affordable, low-maintenance and eco-friendly.

Reflecting ecoTECH’s USP, Kährs range has a number of environmental features, in addition to FSC-certification, and to the eco-construction which features throughout. A glueless Woodloc® joint allows the floors to be laid without adhesive and relocated if necessary, whilst a solvent-free satin lacquer prefinish provides exceptional durability without the addition of harmful substances. After years of wear, the floors can be sanded, at least twice - and, just as Kährs uses waste wood to produce bio-fuel during manufacture, the finished floor is also completely recyclable.

Fantastic oak flooring…..we love it

Oak wooden flooring is a favourite of homeowners, architects, designers and decorators everywhere, especially those that stage homes in the hope of getting their clients quicker sales! It is also now a favourite of the average homeowner as well as a direct result of the coverage that it has received in recent months. Many may have put off having oak wooden flooring installed in the past because they perceived it as too expensive,  too much hassle to install. However, none of the above actually applies anymore so now you have no excuse!

Oak wooden flooring is today readily available from numerous suppliers all over the UK. As a result it is extremely accessible and no longer as exclusive as it once was in terms of the price. The price has had to come down to a more affordable level for it to become as popular as it has! New technology for creating the flooring has lowered the price drastically, as has the availability of oak. Many companies only use sustainable wood from sustainable forests so your home will not have a major negative impact on the environment in that way.

Affordable and available oak wooden flooring can put the finishing touches to any room because it comes in a variety of different styles. You can get lacquered, oiled and varnished flooring in a variety of shades so it can help you to create any given effect. It can actually help to capture the light in an Old traditional style home or compliment ultra morden new homes. It can compliment red, blue, yellow or any other colours of sofa in a living room, and it can bring out subtle tones in the wall décor as well.

The light brown to darker tones of White Oak undergo a medium degree of colour change with slight ambering over time.

EUROPEAN MAPLE

Famous for having no taste or smell, it is ofter used for kitchen worktops and chopping boards. Compared with Hard Maple, European Maple has a lustre all of its own that gives the room a clean airy feel. The thin annual rings and soft figuring make it unique. Despite being 15-20% softer than Hard Maple, it is still very hard and durable. It takes coloured stains easily, and is popular because of its wide area of applicaion in interior design and furniture.

Merbau is one of the hardest floors available.

JARRAH

Has been used traditonally for boatbuilding, railway sleepers and telegraph poles because of its durability and hardness. Jarrah has a smooth surface and straight graining, which has also made it sought after for the manufacture of furniture, doors and floors. The sapwood and heartwood vary from salmon-pink to deep red. ERIF UK Matchplay Championships

ERIF UK Matchplay Championships @ Romsey G.C (Monday 30/06/08)

This was the third round of the championship. The previous two being played in early may. My opponent for this round was the in-form Jon Barnes (a three time winner of this event) from Sherfield Oaks. My form running into this competition was poor but after signing a golf coach for the first time to keep an eye on my game, I was hoping to turn things around. Unfortunately I didnt start as well as my opponent, a birdie at the first was good enough to put Jon 1up. I quickly snatched one back at the long par 4 2nd. By the time we had completed the front nine I was 6 shots down on Jon. For I while I looked like I was able to clitch a few holes back and make a match of it, but a birdie from Jon on the short Par 4 14th was enough to finish my championship hopes. Jon later went on to win the tournament

Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club Pro - Am (Thursday 12/06/08)

Brockenhurst Manor Golf Club Pro - Am (Thursday 12/06/08)

Brockenhurst Golf course is an attractive forest course set in the New Forest, with the unusual feature of three loops of six holes each to complete the round. Some of the best holes include the short 5th and 12th, and the 4th and 17th, both dog legged. A stream also features on seven of the holes. The course measures 6222yds and has a par of 70.

On another still and sunny day which turned out to be a bit of a struggle for the team and myself. This was my worst round of the year and for possibly the previous 3 years, I carded a score of 84 (14 over par). With the team score not being much better it was certainly a day to forget.

Cams Hall Golf Club Pro-Am

Cams Hall Golf Club Pro-Am (Tuesday 20/5/08)

Situated just off the M27 at Junction 11.

The Cams Hall estate consists of two golf courses, the Creek course and the Park course, both of which were designed by Peter Alliss. This year the Cams Hall Pro-Am was played on the Creek course, which measures 6,224yds with the front nine being much more of a Parkland course and the back nine a Links, looking out over the Solent.

This was my first proper visit to Cams Hall (the first being a practice round), and my score for the day possibly reflects this. Caught out by much of the well placed troublesome areas I shot a staggeringly high 80 on a rather short, Par 71. Added to this my team also struggled.

Apart from the golf, both myself and my playing partners enjoyed the day

Hockley Golf Club Pro-Am

Hockley Golf Club Pro-Am (Friday 6/06/08)

Situated off Jct 11 on M3, follow signs for Twyford

Hockley Golf Club is a well designed Downland golf course that is well known for its strong winds. It is a par 71 that measures 6,336 yds and had surved me well during my amateur career managing to claim victory in the Junior Open, winning on the second extra hole in a three way play-off and later winning the Mens Open (Delhi Cup) by two shots in 2007.

This year the pro am was played in sunny but blustery weather and proved to be another good test.

After a solid front nine of level Par, the game plan was to carry on playing consistently and to take all chances when presented. Unfortunately it wasn't to be and I dropped two shots in the closing nine holes, finishing on two over par. There were many chances to improve on my solid start, with numerous birdie opportunities but sadly they slipped by.

A lot more positives to be taken from this round of golf with a very good contribution made by my team.
