Engineered wooden floors are adaptable and sturdy
What are engineered wooden floors?
Engineered wooden floors comprise of more than one layer of wood. Made from multi layers of wood floorings, the top is made of real wood which could be oak or walnut. Such boards, therefore last longer and have become popular in use commercially as well as in houses.
The top layer which is made from real wood varies in thickness from 1mm to 8mm. A base layer of wooden ply is positioned at a right angle to the top layer. Such a structure prevents the movement which is seen to occur in solid wood.
Types of engineered wooden floorings:
- Two ply wooden floors: Such wooden floorings comprise of one layer of real wood and one layer of ply beneath it.
- Three ply wooden floors: These are made of one layer of real wood and two layers of ply wood below it positioned at opposite angles to the top layer.
- Multi ply wooden floors: Comprised of one layer of real wood and multi layers of ply placed below it, multi ply wooden floors prove to be more sturdy and stable. Multi ply wooden floorings which are 18mm thick or more than that are also referred to as structural boards. These can be used directly on the joists, keeping the finished wooden flooring at a lower height.
Oak tends to expand. Such a movement is eliminated as the layers in such engineered wooden floorings are glued to the top layer at an angle of 90 degrees.
