Can any hardwood floor be used for sports and activities?

Hardwood flooring is known for being incredibly durable and strong. However, most hardwood floors are designed for home and commercial use, and they simply aren’t suitable as a surface on which to play sports and activities.

Anyone who is considering buying a flooring material for a sports and activity hall, either in a school, leisure centre, sports centre or gym, should not use standard hardwood flooring. This material is designed to withstand scratches and scrapes, but it is not designed to bear up under the pressure of a dozen athletes hurling themselves across it.

If you use standard hardwood flooring in this kind of environment, you will find that it won’t last more than a few months. It could even be dangerous to the people using the sports facility.

Sports and activity flooring

Luckily, there is a special type of hardwood flooring which has been specifically developed with sports and other physical activities in mind. Many wood flooring manufacturers offer it, but one of the leading manufacturers of sports flooring is Kahrs.

Kahrs sports and activity flooring is especially thick, containing an extra layer of wood, polyethylene and polyether to absorb the shock, impact and energy generated in sporting activities. In total, Kahrs sports floors have four layers and can be sanded a number of times.
