MATCHING YOUR FURNITURE TO YOUR HARDWOOD FLOORING

Hardwood flooring gives a gorgeous, luxurious look and feel to whatever room you fit it in, completely transforming your home, while also adding considerable value. For a truly outstanding makeover, however, you won’t want to just stop after your flooring.

You now have more choice than ever before when it comes to hardwood flooring, so if you take the time to weigh up your options, you can find something absolutely perfect. While people are putting a great deal of time and effort into choosing the right hardwood flooring for their home, we don’t always put the same thought into the furniture going in our newly decorated room. The right pieces of furniture can complement your new flooring perfectly, adding another element to your room – so how do you match your furniture to your hardwood flooring?

While it may be tempting to go for the lazy option and opt for furniture made from the same wood species as your floor, design experts recommend avoiding this. A room with all the furniture made from the same colour or style of wood as the floor can soon become boring and dull to look at.

Try to opt for furniture in a lighter or darker shade to your floor, to allow each to stand out on its own – just make sure that you maintain a unified style across your room. If you don’t feel comfortable using a different species of wood, try opting for the same wood in a different finish – if your hardwood floor has a shiny, polished finish, try some furniture with a more distressed finish.

The colour of the furniture you choose will, of course, depend on the look and feel you want the room to have. If you have opted for a lighter wood to try and create the illusion of space, try to also use lighter furniture to further this effect.

If you already have furniture and don’t want to purchase more, you can still use soft furnishing to accentuate your new floor. Look for things like rugs, curtains, throws and pillows in complementary colours to give a similar effect.

Regardless of the style or colour of your furniture, you want to look after your floor. Don’t forget to put felt pads on the feet of your furniture to protect your floor and reduce the risk of it becoming scratched. It is also important to refrain from moving your furniture too much, and if you do need to move it make sure you lift it rather than slide it across your floor.

At Just Wood, we supply beautiful wood flooring in a wide range of different colours and styles. To see our full range, visit our Types of Wood page to find a style that is perfect for your home.
