The Most Expensive Woods From Around The Globe

Wood flooring is one of the most popular choices for houses, enhancing a home with a beautiful and timeless finish that will never go out of style. While oak, beech, ash and maples are some of the more common woods you might’ve heard of, there are woods around the globe that are so valuable they fetch a very high price tag.

Want to find out more about some of the most expensive woods from around the world? Read on to find out.

Sandalwood

Sandalwood is often used in the cosmetics industry such as in perfumes. This is due to the long-lasting scent that sandalwood oil produces. Prices for sandalwood have been driven up as the demand for sandalwood increases while there aren’t enough new trees being grown.

Pink Ivory

Pink ivory is an African wood that is incredibly dense, durable and resistant to decay. It is protected and sustainably maintained in South Africa, only felled in very limited quantities.

Agarwood

Agarwood has a large price tag due to its rarity and high demand. It’s famous for the oil, tea and perfume that it produces. It’s one of the most expensive natural raw materials in the world, with prices reaching as high as $100,000 for a kilogram in 2010.

Purpleheart

Purpleheart grows in some parts of Central America and is often used on boats due to its water resistance. It is a very unique wood, with a brown colour that changes to purple when cut down and exposed to UV light.

Dalbergia

Dalbergia is extremely complicated to work with, which is what makes it so expensive to use. Its sawdust can be poisonous to people, which is why some refuse to even consider working with it. It is mainly used to make amazing furniture and sports goods.

Bubinga

Bubinga is used for producing high-quality furniture and tools, due to its durability and resistance to termites and marine borer attacks.

African Blackwood

African blackwood is one of the most expensive woods in the world due to it being challenging to work with and a reduced number of trees available. It is mostly used for musical instruments due to its resistance to warping and durability.
