The tones and hues of different types of wood floors can dramatically change the feel of a room as well as the look. When buying new wooden flooring for your home, you should think very carefully about the mood and the atmosphere you want to create in each room and choose a colour which will help you to achieve that.

In the first part of this guide, we looked at wood flooring in tones at the paler end of the colour spectrum and the kinds of moods they can create in a room. Now let’s move onto darker hues.

• Red and orange tones – wood floors in tones of orange, red and cherry have a very exotic feel, as well as being very vibrant, striking and also quite expensive-looking.  Above all though, red-toned wood floors are warm, rich, intimate and welcoming.

• Rich browns – one of the most common colour palettes, browns are earthy, comfortable and very natural-feeling (which is what wood flooring should be, after all). Brown-tinted wood flooring also promotes a sense of safety and security. Depending on what type of wood you choose, brown floors can also be very rustic and traditional.
