Different Ways to Up Your Wooden Flooring Design Game

If you’re looking for a subtle way to improve the aesthetic appeal of your home without breaking the bank or completely rethinking your interior design choices, then your flooring could be a great place to start. There are a number of finishes you can achieve with a wooden floor that could really complement the rest of your home design vision.

We’ve listed three different techniques you can use to add considerate design to your flooring, each capable of being completed with different budgets and ease in mind.

Wood Stain

Staining is a great way to add a bit more oomph to your flooring. If you’re tired of looking at the same old wooden floors you’ve had in your home for years and feel that they’re starting to look a little bland, then a wood stain can bring these back to life whilst complimenting the rest of your home.

Wood stains come in varying colours that add a slight tint to your wood to change its tonal appearance. They also have practical properties, since they also seal off the pores in wood, making your floors water resistant and offering protection from UV rays, minimising the chances of discoloration.

If you do plan to wood stain your floors, it is worth noting that the colour you pick may show up differently to how you intend based on the existing colour of your floors. For example, a grey stain would look great on white oak or ash, whilst mahogany stain would work better with a medium oak. Remember to consider how the lighting and colour of your walls may affect its appearance, as well!

Oak Herringbone

Herringbone flooring is a great way to incorporate a bit of flair into your home thanks to its patterned design, without being too in your face. Rather than being a finish, like wood stains, herringbone involves relaying your floor. Typically, it is done using hardwood flooring, such as oak, whereby the planks are cut and laid in a way that creates a chevron pattern on your floor.

Thanks to the natural highlights and grains in the wood, laying the flooring in this way allows for these to appear more pronounced, giving the illusion of texture and depth.

Before deciding to go ahead with herringbone flooring, consider where in your house you plan on having it. We personally think that it works best in larger rooms and open areas, where it can truly be appreciated and make a statement.

Distressed Wood Flooring

If you’re after a more rustic and intentionally imperfect floor design that has a lot of character, then distressed wood flooring could be perfect for you.

In order to achieve this look, slight imperfections are added to the surface of the wooden floor, giving it a purposefully aged appearance that oozes charm. It is then protected with layers of oil or lacquer, which not only protects the floor before it is used, but also adds a lustrous shine.

If you’re looking to spruce up your flooring, then you need Just Wood Flooring. We offer a number of hardwood floor renovation services, whether it be refinishing old floors or laying down new herringbone flooring.
