What Is Parquet Flooring and Should I Be Installing It?

Parquet flooring is wooden flooring placed into a geometric pattern, there is no certain manner in which the floor must be laid to fit a specific geometric pattern to be classed as parquet flooring, this means there is much room for creative freedom with this wood flooring design option! Let’s take a closer look at parquet flooring and its usage!

Where Does the Word Come From?

The phrase literally translates to “a small enclosed space” and comes from the Old French term parchet, which is a diminutive of parc.

Four Most Popular Styles of Parquet Flooring

Chevron Parquet – Chevron parquet flooring uses equal-length wood planks, much like a herringbone pattern. However, because the ends are angled, a “V” pattern, commonly known as a chevron, is created when the top end of one plank is put against another.

Versailles Parquet – Because it was used in the magnificent Palace of Versailles, this design is well-known for the diagonals in this detailed pattern interlace.

Mosaic Parquet – The mosaic or “brick” pattern is comprised of tiny rows of hardwood panels that are arranged into square tiles. The mosaic pattern is created by aligning each tile perpendicular to the tile directly adjacent to it, creating an easy-to-appreciate visual impact.

Herringbone Parquet – Equal-length panels of wood are cut into rectangles with flat 90° angles to create the herringbone pattern. Each plank’s end is positioned such that it touches the side of an adjacent panel, creating a lovely and sturdy structure that minimises movement despite the planks’ close proximity to one another.
